Analysis: The Wemby Show is underway, and opening night was a circus

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:27:34 GMT

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The final numbers for Victor Wembanyama in his Summer League debut: nine points on 2-for-13 shooting, eight rebounds, five blocked shots, three assists. Not on the stat sheet: the countless pictures and videos captured on phones, the couple dozen or so times he applauded a good play made by a teammate, and all the autographs that a very friendly San Antonio Spurs coach named Gregg Popovich signed at halftime for kids and other fans. The Wemby Show is underway. The outcome on Friday night doesn’t matter much and will be forgotten in the next couple days — for the record, the Spurs beat the Charlotte Hornets 76-68 on Day 1 of the NBA Summer League. But for the 17,500 people who bought tickets, most of them just to say they saw Wembanyama’s first time sweating in a Spurs game uniform, it was a night to remember.Wembanyama did a lot of things well, which can’t be a surprise. He screened well. Passed well. Defended well at times; Charlotte’s Brandon Miller, the No. 2 pick ...

Sailors rejoice after snowy winter raises Great Salt Lake — for now

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:27:34 GMT

ON THE GREAT SALT LAKE (AP) — A brisk wind caught a Kevlar-fiber sail, sending it snapping as Bob Derby and Randy Atkin pulled lines to turn Red Stripe, their 25-foot boat, through the briny waters of the imperiled Great Salt Lake. Little could be heard beyond the low hum of trucks wheeling past a copper smelter on the lake’s shoreline — a respite from the bustle of Salt Lake City and its booming suburbs that push farther into Utah’s deserts and farmland each year.“Everything that happened today drifts off behind you and there’s nothing like it,’” said Derby, a 61-year-old veteran sailor battling cancer. “There’s no better therapy than being on the lake.”It’s a feeling old friends Derby and Atkin weren’t sure they’d experience again. The Red Stripe’s return comes after it and hundreds of other sailboats were hoisted out of the shrinking Great Salt Lake as water levels plummeted in recent years, leaving docks along the lake’s parched southern...

WESTMINSTER, Colo (KDVR) -- This weekend, hundreds of golfers will tee off at Hyland Hills Golf Course in Westminster for the second Jackson Zinn Memorial Golf Tournament. It’s been more than a year since a tragic crash in Texas claimed the lives of six college athletes and a coach from the University of the Southwest in New Mexico, including Jackson Zinn, 22, from Colorado.  On March 15, 2022, Zinn, his seven teammates and his coach were on their way back from a golf tournament when police said a truck driver hit them head-on. Only two survived the crash, Dayton Price and Hayden Underhill, both members of the university’s golf team. The Zinn family started this tournament last year in their son’s name as a way to honor him and give back to his teammates and the community he loved. Zinn’s mother, Jen Zinn, said her son grew up on the golf course. “Ever since Jackson could walk he carried a golf club,” Jen Zinn said. “I’d give him $10 for a cheeseburger ...

EU, Latin America at odds on Ukraine and Mercosur trade ahead of big summit

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:27:34 GMT

European and Latin American countries are miles apart on Ukraine and a Mercosur trade deal — just 10 days ahead of a major summit meeting in Brussels meant to showcase their deepening relations.A draft joint declaration, seen by POLITICO, shows that the two blocs don’t see eye to eye on whether to condemn Russia’s war in Ukraine, ahead of the July 17-18 gathering that will bring together leaders from the 27-nation EU and the 33 countries of the Community of the Latin American & the Caribbean States (CELAC).A counterproposal from CELAC countries, sent to diplomats earlier this week, removed all reference to the war in Ukraine. In addition, the CELAC countries have demanded reparations over colonial occupation, as reported by Euractiv and confirmed by a European diplomat who had seen the text.“We condemn in the strongest possible terms Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, which manifestly violates the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Ukraine and threa...

Fashion’s sustainability reckoning

COPENHAGEN — On the surface, it was everything you would expect from a high-end fashion industry knees-up.Green juice for breakfast, impeccably dressed conference-goers, Moët & Chandon flowing before dinner. But the topic at the heart of this year’s Global Fashion Summit in Copenhagen was less glamorous: How can a sector that has thrived on novelty and extravagance survive global efforts to slash carbon emissions and eliminate waste? From bringing more transparency to supply chains to developing more sustainable manufacturing methods, panels revolved around how the fashion industry can fall in line with upcoming EU and U.S. regulations — sharp-ish.That’s with good reason. The bloc’s textiles industry faces an onslaught of regulation that could force a reckoning over its environmental and human rights abuses. The EU’s textile and clothing sector had a turnover of €147 billion — and trillions globally — in 2021, according to industry body Euratex. Schoen: Christie’s attacks on Trump provide edge for Dems

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:27:34 GMT

Trump-acolyte turned Trump-rival Chris Christie is off to an intriguing start in his campaign for the GOP presidential nomination. Since launching his dark horse candidacy in early June, Christie has taken swipes at Trump and DeSantis and garnered a modest bump in the polls.Although a longshot for the nomination, Christie has been stronger than most pundits predicted. Due to his consistent schedule of television interviews and soundbites of him attacking Trump, he is receiving more national media attention than most other Trump challengers.Arguably more important than the momentum and early success of Christie’s campaign is the blueprint he is laying out for other candidates. The Christie playbook has included calling out Trump’s election lies, highlighting his repeated electoral losses, pointing to the evidence in Trump’s indictments rather than blaming the Department of Justice, questioning why so many of his former staffers say he should not be president again, and framing him as...
