By Aamer Madhani, Seung Min Kim and Colleen Long | Associated PressWASHINGTON — President Joe Biden on Wednesday spoke out against retaliatory attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank in the aftermath of the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks on Israel. He also said he was redoubling his commitment to working on a two-state solution to end the decades-long Israel-Palestinian conflict.Biden said the attacks by “extremist settlers” amounted to “pouring gasoline” on the already burning fires in the Middle East since the Hamas attack.“It has to stop. They have to be held accountable. It has to stop now,” Biden said at the start of a news conference with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who was being honored with a state visit to Washington.Settler violence against Palestinians has intensified since the Hamas attack, and Palestinians have been killed by settlers, according to Palestinian authorities. RICHMOND — When officials in this city of only 115,000 people announced they would be voting on a resolution to support Palestinians living in Gaza amid the worst outbreak of violence between Israel and Hamas in decades, it drew hundreds of people to Tuesday’s city council meeting. The Richmond City Council cleared its entire Tuesday night schedule to discuss the controversial stance, which protests what the resolution characterizes as an ongoing campaign of ethnic cleansing, collective punishment and war crimes by the state of Israel. A vote approving the lengthy resolution wasn’t tallied until just after 1 a.m. Wednesday — establishing what appears to be the first of its kind in the nation.Nearly five hours of public testimony was delivered by scores of community leaders and local residents on all sides of the conflict, which has already claimed the lives of more than 6,500 Palestinians and 1,400 Israelis.Richmond’s elected officials patiently listened to the hund...SFPD: Dog stolen from owner after Tenderloin robbery

On Sept. 3, Joshua Ballard, 23, got into a fight with two customers at an In-N-Out burger, Price said. He then pulled out a gun and reportedly fired two rounds into the crowded eatery. One bullet hit an innocent bystander in the ankle, Price said. Ballard fled the scene, and an unregistered "ghost gun" was found at the restaurant by police. One killed, another injured in San Leandro barbershop shooting Ballard is also facing charges for two murders he allegedly committed in the parking lot outside of 24-Hour Fitness Bayfair in San Leandro. SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Dallas Mavericks All-Star Luka Doncic will play in Victor Wembanyama’s debut with the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night.Doncic was listed as questionable with a left calf strain he sustained Oct. 9 but was cleared to play in the season opener for both teams after practicing. He has not played since straining the calf as Dallas practiced for its exhibition game against Real Madrid on Oct 10 in Spain. Doncic was limited to 4:53 against the team he played three seasons for in the Euroleague before joining the Mavericks in 2018.Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said the team will monitor Doncic, but there are no plans to restrict his minutes.“He’ll come out when he’s tired,” Kidd said. “We’re not going to use the word restriction. He’s going to play, and we’ll see how he goes. We’ll be in communication with him as the game goes on. He could come out early. I don’t think he will play his normal whole first, but we’ll always check and see how he’s doing and then we’ll go fro...Bears QB Tyson Bagent ready to test his arm strength more against the Chargers

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Chicago Bears quarterback Tyson Bagent had reporters laughing Sunday after he led a 30-12 win in his starting debut against the Las Vegas Raiders. The former Division II player hadn’t completed a pass longer than 17 yards as the Bears stuck to their short game, but he said he has a “cannon” for an arm. It seems the Bears could let him show off his arm strength Sunday night in his first road start against the Los Angeles Chargers.“Yeah, I mean I think I have a strong arm,” Bagent said Wednesday at Halas Hall. “I’m confident to make any play that’s called. That’s probably the extent of it.”Bagent starts again because of Justin Fields’ dislocated thumb, after going 21 for 29 for 162 yards and a touchdown in the win. Upon film review, NFL NextGen Stats said he averaged 2.1 air yards on his completions. But Bagent and coach Matt Eberflus expect their offense to be challenged more on short passes this week, so there may be a need to go up top. “We’re always going t...Autoworkers say they have reached a deal with Ford, a breakthrough that could end strikes against Detroit automakers

ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) — Hurricane Otis tore across Mexico’s southern Pacific coast as a powerful and dangerous Category 5 hurricane Wednesday, unleashing massive flooding in the resort city of Acapulco, sending sheets of earth down steep mountainsides, and cutting power and cell service in large swaths of the state of Guerrero. While little is known about possible deaths or the full extent of the damage — the main highway into Acapulco is impassable — experts are calling Otis the strongest hurricane in history to make landfall along the Eastern Pacific Coast. The storm had dissipated over the mountains by Wednesday afternoon, but appeared to have left a fair amount of devastation in its wake. Acapulco’s Diamond Zone, an oceanfront area replete with hotels, restaurants and other tourist attractions, appeared to be mostly underwater in drone footage that Foro TV posted online Wednesday afternoon, with boulevards and bridges completely hidden by an enormous lake of brown wate...Rangers now focus on playing as well at home in World Series vs Arizona as they have on road

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers have played only four home games over the past month, and lost all three in the AL Championship Series. Yet, there they were back at Globe Life Field on Wednesday getting ready to host Game 1 of the World Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. So is it really home-field advantage for a team that’s already matched a postseason record by winning its first eight road games?“We love playing here,” All-Star catcher Jonah Heim said before the Rangers worked out. “Throughout the whole year, we’ve played pretty good at home.”Except against the Houston Astros, which is why the Rangers went into these playoffs as a wild-card team that didn’t have home-field advantage until now.Game 1 is Friday night in the retractable-roof stadium that hosted MLB’s neutral-site World Series in 2020, the first year the ballpark opened. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos are pleased Kareem Jackson’s four-game suspension was cut in half, but some of his teammates still contend the NFL is making an example out of the hard-hitting safety by punishing what was actually a clean hit though it looked much worse on the field.Coach Sean Payton argued Jackson’s case via Zoom on Tuesday with hearing officer Derrick Brooks, who issued the two-game reduction. Safety Justin Simmons gave a spirited, nearly five-minute defense of his teammate after practice Wednesday.Simmons suggested Jackson’s hit on Green Bay tight end Luke Musgrave was actually a legal shoulder-to-shoulder strike that appeared on the field to be a helmet-to-helmet hit. It resulted in a 15-yard penalty, his second disqualification of the season and the suspension without pay that will cost him about $279,000 in lost wages.Jackson is also expected to be fined a fifth time this season for violations of the league’s unnecessary rough...Latest news
