DENVER (KDVR) -- A section of one of the busiest boulevards in Denver is about to get a serious makeover and it is probably going to cause some traffic trouble before it is finished.Advocates for safer streets said there have been way too many pedestrian crashes along Federal Boulevard. They said the new improvements should lessen those accidents. Northern Colorado mortuary faces over 150 counts of unlawful acts of cremation "We are thrilled to see the city breaking ground on actual permanent improvements to that area," said Jill Locantore, Denver Streets Partnership executive director. For more than a decade, advocates have pushed for pedestrian improvements along Federal Boulevard."Federal Boulevard is one of the most dangerous streets in the city," said Locantore. "It's currently designed like a highway to move as many cars as fast as possible which is just really in direct conflict with how people are trying to use the street. It's also one of the busiest transit corridors...

EU weighs sanctions against Iran over Israel-Hamas war

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 19:22:47 GMT

The EU is discussing ramping up sanctions against Iran over its support for Hamas — but there is a wide split among EU diplomats over whether that’s a good idea.Meanwhile, the big three EU member states — Germany, France and Italy — also have drawn up plans, seen by POLITICO, on how to further sanction Hamas. Tehran has long been a key backer of Hamas, which carried out attacks on October 7 in which some 1,400 Israeli citizens were killed and more than 240 people kidnapped. U.S. and Israeli officials have stated there is no evidence directly linking Iran to the attack. Yet some within the EU want to prepare extra sanctions on Iran, in particular a ban on the export of components used in the production of missiles. The EU listed Hamas as a terrorist organization years ago and there are a number of sanctions already in place. As for Iran, last month the EU decided to keep in place its sanctions linked to the Iran nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Ac...

Belgium Photo-illustration by Guillermo Flores for POLITICOSpeaking Italian can get you a long way in this sleepy postindustrial town on Belgium’s eastern edge. The empty sidewalks of Maasmechelen are studded with shabby pizzerias, delis, coffee bars and sports shops showcasing selections of Italy merch — the legacy of a wave of Italian immigration that started in the late 1940s.Recently however the Flemish town was also the site of another, more sinister Italian import. On an early spring morning earlier this year, Belgian police carrying an international arrest warrant swooped in on a gated villa. Then came a loud knock on the door, and Lucio Aquino — known as the “Godfather of Maasmechelen” — was handcuffed and led to a waiting police car.The arrest was part of a pan-European bust, as pol...

Behind Jaylen Brown and strong bench play, Celtics respond with win over Nets

As they faced their first test of adversity, Kristaps Porzingis was curious to see how the Celtics responded. They had dropped two winnable games in a row after looking like world beaters in the first five games. After Wednesday’s loss to the 76ers, Porzingis said he even liked adversity. As these new-look Celtics look to develop chemistry with each other, their response was an important building block, even if it’s still early November. It was what they were looking for. The Nets, even without leading scorer Cam Thomas, gave the Celtics all they could handle again, just six days after they did so in Brooklyn. But the Celtics, once again, had every response. Jaylen Brown scored 28 points on five 3-pointers in a big bounce-back effort, Jayson Tatum added 23, Jrue Holiday nearly had a triple-double with 13 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists, and the bench stepped up with big contributions as the Celtics pulled away from the feisty Nets for a 121-107 victory at TD Garden. The Celtics wo...
